Having discussed potential ideas for the voice-acting of our animation, we've considered using a narrator (like in the 1966's 'Batman' TV series) to commentate on what's happening. That way saving us from having to find 2 or 3 more voice actors (for Fashion Man, the victim and the attacker/fireman), and only having to find the one.
General sayings from the original Batman series:
"Quick! To the Batmobile!'
'Precisely, Robin'
"Old Chum"
'Holy haberdashery!'
'Holy Guacamole!'
'Holy incantation!'
'Holy Felony'
"We must thwart some criminals"
Batman: "Of course! It's staring us right in our masks, Robin. That quote is on line 769 of chapter 14, scroll 32 of the 13th section of the works of Ramses the Bald, one of the many ancient and irreplaceable scrolls at the Gotham city library"
Robin "How could I have missed that one?"
[Preposterous leaps of logic]
Robin: "Let's go!"
Batman: "Not you, Robin. They have strict licensing laws in this country. A boy of your age is not allowed in a drinking tavern". [Teaching lessons to viewers]
"Watch out, Batman! The powers of darkness lurk in this room!"
"A robbery?"
"No, an ambush!"
"Which backfired!"
"Deduction by the Duo!"
"A daring escape by Blaze"
"Nabbed by the caped crusader"
"Holy entanglement!"
"The dynamic due on the wrong track, facing a fearsome fate. Wait, the wildest is yet to come!"
"What is false-faces fiendish foolery. Are the Caped Crusaders heading into a cul-de-sac? Will this be the dead-end for the dedicated deeds of Batman and Robin?"
"Will Batman ever see Robin alive again?"
"Will Robin ever see Batman alive again?
"The answer to these and many other terrifying questions. Tomorrow night, same cat time, same cat channel!"
"So far... we've seen a cat burglar strike!"
[Lots of questions. Voices the viewers ideas. Updates everyone on what's happening]
Own Examples:
"Great Scott, Fashion Man! Haven't you realised? That fashion choices have been left unchecked? Quick now! Before it's too late!"
"But what is this? Fashion Man running back for seconds? Has our mighty platform shoe warrior spotted another citizen in need of a makeover?"
"Fear not loyal viewers, nothing escapes our flared trouser warrior [caped crusader] for long! Tune in again. Same diva-time! Same Diva-channel!
Non-digetic and diegetic sounds in Comics:
Note the typical comic differentiation between diegetic sounds and non-diegetic, across 1960's comic books [above 'Batman: The Hand From Nowhere' Volume #130, and Batman: Your Face is your Fortune' Volume #15]. Non-diegetic voice overs and diegetic speech across radios/TV sets were often seen in a darker yellow speech bubbles, with square, jagged outlines.
Non-diegetic and diegetic sounds in live-action show:
In show, speech and sound effects were shown visually with overlaid text.
Introduction- film stills with text overlaid.
[Limitations of technology meant emphasis on character and acting- though this wasn't always 'good' acting]
Next stage is to:
> Experiment with proportions
> Stylise/exaggerate a little more (using 1960's fashion design illustrations as reference [*]).
> Figure out logo
> Decide on defining assets of design (cape, glasses, boots, etc.)
> Create bystander characters
> Include optional designs with no capes (for ease of Maya animation).
7) For the overall structure of our animation we hope to
have random and fast paced scenarios, rather Like the way ASDF present there YouTube
animations. Each scene will involve our main character “Fashion Man.” We want
our opening scene to really show Fashion Man’s personality, character and
intentions as a superhero. Then maybe have a small introduction of Fashion Man
explaining who he is, or at least who he thinks he is! After this, the
scenarios will play immediately one after the other.
8) Set/Background Ideas: We want our animation to be set in
the modern day. The set will consist of
various environments that include: a main street, a high rise building and a
park. The scenes will be simple in their design and suggest environments rather
than contain detailed, busy scenes.
NOTE TO RACHAEL: for this part of the OGR I think it would be better to have 3 separate pages for the discussed, rejected and kept ideas. The first page could be just a collage of the list above? Below I've typed up some text that could also be used if you're not keen on the first idea.
Once our team received the orange envelope, we immediately generated a list of characters that we thought would fit the theme of 'World's Worst'. The early ideas we gravitated towards involved real-life situations e.g Speed Dating, Parents, Students, News presenter. We also discussed looking at different perspectives like looking at the perspective of both the parent and the child.
In-depth descriptions of early concepts (copied from Updated Ideas Post):
World's Worst Parents:
Looking at different perspectives from both parent and child- the child thinks that their parents are the worst parents in the world for not letting them do things like eating ice cream before bedtime. This isn't a big deal to the parents, but for their child, the world feels like it's about to end. From looking at both perspectives this could give our group the chance to experiment visually, the children's world would look very different compared to the adults.
World's Worst Documentary:
World's Worst Documentary - An explorer on a mission to find a hidden City or Artifact. On the journey, he encounters every hardship you could think of (bad weather, floods, hurricanes, wild animals) and has extremely bad luck for the entire trip. When he finally arrives at the destination, the city either doesn't exist, or the artifact has already been stolen. Meanwhile, a David Attenborough-esque voice is narrating the entire video.
World's Worst Student:
World's Worst Student- A student that hasn't adopted the "student life" They are not necessarily a bad student academically, however they are put into many awkward situations by their peers. Another idea is that we could make an informative video on how to not be the World's Worst Student, and show comedic examples of what a bad student is.
Compilation Video- 'World's Worst...'
A 'Top Ten' Compilation style video that includes lots of different types of characters that fit in with the theme of 'World's Worst' such as:
- Firefighter
-Singer
-Actor
-Superhero
REJECTED IDEAS:
Reasons Why the idea was rejected:
News Anchor :
- Not original/ already been done ( Evan & Bruce Almighty. Anchor Man).
- Difficult to fit in with the 'World's Worst' Theme.
World's Worst Parents/ World's Worst Documentary:
- No punchline, not enough humor.
- Needed to be faster paced
- Overdone Storyline
KEPT IDEAS:
After discussing all the previous ideas with our Tutor, The idea we've kept is an amalgam of a few of our early concepts. These concepts being World's Worst Superhero (derived from the compilation video concept) and two of the early 3-panel comic strips from the same concept)
This sparked the idea of 'Fashion Man' A skit about A superhero that puts his views of fashion over the safety of the city's citizen's, making him possibly one of the world's worst superheroes.

This short animatic is the outcome of acting out some of our skit ideas. It was a great way to visualize what kind of shots we want to use and how we want our skit to look. It also gave us the opportunity to really flesh out our ideas, and can be used as a reference when we get round to animating. I've uploaded the animatic with and without audio so that if we need to, we can dub over the video if we want to change any of the script.
